Tar and chip paving combines liquid asphalt (tar) with a layer of crushed stone (chip).

Is Tar & Chip right for you
?  If you're looking for a budget-friendly, low-maintenance alternative to asphalt with a more natural appearance, tar and chip may be the perfect fit.

Tar & Chip Process

1. Site Clearing & Excavation
We begin by removing vegetation, old material, or debris. The area is excavated to the proper depth for a stable roadbed

2. Installing the Road Base Layer   A thick layer of compacted road-base crushed limestone) is installed. This base is critical for drainage, load-bearing strength, and preventing future settling.

3. Grading & Compacting We carefully grade the surface for proper water runoff and use rollers to compact the base. A well-compacted foundation ensures the tar and chip surface holds up under traffic and weather.

4. Spraying Hot Liquid Asphalt  Once the base is ready, we apply a layer of hot liquid asphalt binder over the surface. This sticky layer acts as the adhesive for the stone chips.

5. Spreading Crushed Stone (Chips)  We spread a layer of clean, crushed stone over the hot asphalt. You can choose from different stone type and colors to match your property’s style.

6. Rolling & Embedding the Stone  Heavy rollers are used to press the stone chips into the hot tar, locking everything in place and creating a textured, skid-resistant surface.

7. Final Touches  For added durability, a second layer can be applied upon request.

Note: completed project will have a loose finish that will naturally become smoother over time. If you want a more immediate smooth surface, we recommend a cure time of 6-8 weeks before sweeping away loose rock. This will allow for the stones to fully embed into the surface.

dolomite rock was the aggregate used for the top layer on this driveway. You can always opt for a different aggregate type. Many folks like crushed washed granite because it is dust free, comes in different colors, and has that nice sparkle making it unique and attractive.
