chip seal paving (Tar & Chip)
what is chip-seal paving?
Tar and chip paving combines liquid asphalt (tar) with a layer of crushed stone (chip).

Is Tar & Chip right for you? If you're looking for a budget-friendly, low-maintenance alternative to asphalt with a more natural appearance, tar and chip may be the perfect fit.
Tar & Chip Process
1. Site Clearing & Excavation We begin by removing vegetation, old material, or debris. The area is excavated to the proper depth for a stable roadbed
2. Installing the Road Base Layer A thick layer of compacted road-base crushed limestone) is installed. This base is critical for drainage, load-bearing strength, and preventing future settling.
3. Grading & Compacting We carefully grade the surface for proper water runoff and use rollers to compact the base. A well-compacted foundation ensures the tar and chip surface holds up under traffic and weather.
4. Spraying Hot Liquid Asphalt Once the base is ready, we apply a layer of hot liquid asphalt binder over the surface. This sticky layer acts as the adhesive for the stone chips.
5. Spreading Crushed Stone (Chips) We spread a layer of clean, crushed stone over the hot asphalt. You can choose from different stone type and colors to match your property’s style.
6. Rolling & Embedding the Stone Heavy rollers are used to press the stone chips into the hot tar, locking everything in place and creating a textured, skid-resistant surface.
7. Final Touches For added durability, a second layer can be applied upon request.
Note: completed project will have a loose finish that will naturally become smoother over time. If you want a more immediate smooth surface, we recommend a cure time of 6-8 weeks before sweeping away loose rock. This will allow for the stones to fully embed into the surface.
