What Is It?
TAR & CHIP PAVING
Tar and chip paving combines liquid asphalt (tar) with a layer of crushed stone (chip). The result is a durable, textured surface that's cost-effective, low-maintenance, and looks great on rural properties throughout Central Texas.
Step by Step
THE TAR & CHIP PROCESS
Site Clearing & Excavation
We begin by removing vegetation, old material, or debris. The area is excavated to the proper depth for a stable roadbed.
Installing the Road Base Layer
A thick layer of compacted road-base (crushed limestone) is installed to create a solid, stable foundation that prevents settling and washouts.
Grading & Compacting
We carefully grade the surface for proper water runoff and use heavy rollers to compact the base to the correct density.
Spraying Hot Liquid Asphalt
Once the base is ready, we apply a layer of hot liquid asphalt binder evenly across the entire surface.
Spreading Crushed Stone (Chips)
We spread a layer of clean, crushed stone over the hot asphalt. You can choose from different stone types and colors to match your property.
Rolling & Embedding the Stone
Heavy rollers press the stone chips firmly into the hot tar, locking everything in place for a durable, long-lasting surface.
Final Touches
For added durability, a second layer can be applied upon request. The completed project will have a loose finish that will naturally become smoother over time. If you want a more immediate smooth surface, we recommend a cure time of 6–8 weeks before sweeping away loose rock.
